Student teams will now be able to compete for the opportunity to present their idea to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio Board of Trustees with the new “Appalachia Challenge” just added to the fifth annual Scripps Innovation Challenge.
This special challenge, sponsored by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, asks teams to discover and innovative methods to find, communicate with, and encourage former citizens of Appalachian Ohio to give back to their local communities. Appalachian Ohio citizens only have access to $762 in per capita philanthropic support, as compared to Ohioans outside the area who can tap into $7,437 of per capita support.
This disparity means citizens and families have less access to scholarships for graduating seniors, programs to assist struggling families, and support for public safety concerns. The challenge’s mission is to find innovative ways to close this philanthropy gap and tap the unopened potential in the region.
The winner of this challenge will have the opportunity to present their idea to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio Board of Trustees. Visit the Scripps Innovation Challenge website to learn more about this special challenge and the other 2016-2017 challenges.
